The .. seem to be based on which directory I am in:

$ pwd
/home/mcatanzaro/Projects/WebKit
$ git rev-parse --git-common-dir
.git
$ cd Source/
$ git rev-parse --git-common-dir
../.git
$ cd WebCore/
$ git rev-parse --git-common-dir
../../.git
