Definitely confirmed.

On my system (MBP 2.5GHz Core 2 Duo, 4 GB RAM, 10.5.5 9F33), playing the
standalone gif in r37605 only peaks my CPU at 70% after playing it all the way
through.  With r37698, my CPU spikes to 100% only a little ways into it.
