Hi Jenn, the WebKit nightly builds actually do launch Safari, but they do it in
such a way as to load a different WebKit framework.  You'll note that the icon
is gold (if you use Command-Tab to switch applications) instead of silver.  The
gold icon is the WebKit nightly, while the silver icon is original Safari.

It sounds like you may have old or conflicting plug-ins installed.  From the
"Window" menu, select "Installed Plug-ins".  Save that page as HTML source (or
as a webarchive), and post it to this bug.  Someone may have an idea about how
to fix the issue by looking at that.
