Trying to help unblock this issue, here is a new version of Jose's patch
address all the issues in comment #10, almost one month ago.

I've kept the authorship as it was since I did not introduce any major change
on them, just those needed to address the mentioned issues and some other minor
fixes and tweaks I found while testing this stuff both through unit tests and
accerciser.
