I'm not the gatekeeper of the WebKit codebase either! But in this specific case, I'd be inclined to ask experts on the editing code (such as Ryosuke and Enrica) whether they think it is a good idea and maintainable.
It would also be useful to know whether any existing ports would want to expose overtype functionality.
