While working around this non web-standard behavior, I notice that Safari Developer Tools lets you apply focus to a selected element at the top of the styles pane
This magically displays what it the element would look like if it could be focused i.e. Developer Tools has already addressed this bug - shame it didn't make it into the main browser window.
