We are at +15 months and webkit still limits a normal use of the devices put on the market.
This limitation has a monstrous impact on an entire ecosystem.
I suspect that the decision is more political than technical (allowing background playback being a "risk" for the popularity of iTunes).

A straightforward communication on this subject seems to me necessary.
