UIHelper.setKeyboardInputModeIdentifier("zh_Hans-Pinyin at sw=Pinyin-Simplified;hw=Automatic") does not switch to Pinyin unless the simulator instance was pre-configured to have the Pinyin keyboard under Settings > General > Keyboard > Keyboards.
