Screenshot of problems

In Safari 12, Verdana will render incorrectly if version 5.02 from 2008 is installed by Microsoft Office. Safari will only render correctly with version 5.01x from 2006 that is installed by the operating system.

The fonts that don't work are in /Library/Fonts/Microsoft/Verdana*.ttf. The fonts that do work are in /Library/Fonts/Verdana*.ttf. (I only confirmed this but with the Regular face, so I'm assuming this issue will be a problem with the other faces.)

The newer version of Verdana works fine in other macOS apps, including Chrome. See the attached screenshot with the WhatFont extension showing that Verdana is not being picked up from the font-family CSS.

This bug is also very difficult to work around: both of the versions of Verdana are "locked" in Font Book, so enabling or disabling fonts isn't possible. I had to use the Terminal and sudo to manually move the offending file from /Library/Fonts/Microsoft to /Library/Fonts Disabled/Microsoft.
