That was it: creating ~/.config/fontconfig/fonts.conf with suitable
  <alias>
    <family>monospace</family>
    <prefer><family>Liberation Mono</family></prefer>
  </alias>


tweaked both `fc-match monospace` and WebKit to use correct monospace font.
