So it seems like our options are:

 * Deprecate this API, because it can never work
 * Decide that YouTube is broken (is it?) and convince YouTube engineers to fix it so that we can bring back the codec installer

Is this right? Is there another option?

I don't want to break YouTube under any circumstances.
