Failed network requests show up well in the network panel. I'm not convinced there's value in logging to the console. See the screenshot for an example of some more or less spammy results.

One potential way of dealing with failures is to have a "network error" link in the bottom corner with a count, similarly to what we do currently for "console error" and "console warning" icons.
