It happened to be locked, yes.  I'm not entirely sure why it was.  I understand that's an uncommon setup (my keychain isn't normally locked either).  But it seemed odd that this test would call to the keychain at all.

I suspect sampling DRT while the dialog would up woudl quickly answer why.  I can do that when i'm next in front of my hacking machine.
