It might be more appropriate to move this discussion to whatwg in that case.

One compelling use case I've heard for this feature is the "eye dropper" tool in a drawing program.  In most drawing programs, this tool lets you select a color by clicking on the color you want in the drawing.  If the drawing program uses, for example, SVG to render the drawing, they want to essentially want to sample the drawing at a particular x/y offset, as rendered by the browser.

Another use case is something like a highly polished magazine that wants to apply fancy graphical effects to articles (e.g., documents with text, floats, and all that good stuff).  For example, they might want a carefully controlled page-turning effect where they've customized the rendering to mimic experience of turning a page in a real magazine.
