I'm glad you asked. :)

In QuickTime Player, I believe the fast forward button increases the playback rate to 2x, 4x, 8x, then wraps back around to 2x.  (Same with rewind.)

I believe some of the content up at Apple.com has adopted this style in their custom javascript controls as well.
