I think that this is correct behavior. There is nothing invalid about these URLs - and the engine can't really know what result opening a link gives. As an example, no browser checks if a domain exists when styling an http link like <a href="http://does.no.exist/index.html">.

Please don't prefix cross-platform bugs with [Qt]. This significantly limits the audience, as many people don't read platform specific bugs and patches.
