I can confirm that this is not an issue with the current release of WebKit/Safari (Version 5.0.3 (6533.19.4)

There is certainly a large RAM requirement for Safari in the current version, but usually does not exceed 400 MB at one time, even with multiple downloads of large files. The WebKit nightly, on the other hand, does have this issue in my testing.
