This problem has eluded me and several others who have offered help for a long time.  Turns out the problem is the result of years and years of migration from machine to machine, OSX to OSX versions having compatibility issues with the upgrading of QuickTime.

Problem is fixed by removing QuickTime preferences and QuickTime plugin preferences.  Mine were created in 2006.

Fixed both my wife's iMac and my new MacBook Pro.
