ORWT lauches the ImageDiff tool and feeds it Images via stdin/stdout.
I think NRWT does that for normal WebKit ports too.

TestShell/Chromium has always written the image files out to disk (and I assume it launches a new copy of ImageDiff for each diff it produces.
