Ok, r71499 works now for me under VMWare Fusion. The problem was that I never updated Safari from 4.0.3 to 5.0.2. I thought I was running the latest Safari but I was not. Once I updated Safari to 5.0.2, the webkit nightly worked fine. Sorry for the distraction.
