Git has contained --force option since 2008 (GIT v1.6.0.x). Actually, the latest stable Git version is 1.7.1. 

I think it's easier to update git than adding unnecessary changes and unit tests. (Furthermore, v1.6 and v1.7 contains significant performance improvements which are beneficial - especially - for large trees like WebKit.)
