The bug you describe is different from this one.  I forgot to update this bug after I determined the contributing factors.

The contributing factor for this specific bug is the use of plugins.  At the time of reporting this bug I had only gnash installed, and disabling netscape plugins caused gmail to not go blank.  This happened in Midori, GtkLauncher, and Arora (Qt Webkit browser), but did not occur with Firefox, which led me to conclude that it must be a bug in Webkit, and now more specifically the way it handles plugins (maybe?).
