This bug is still relevant; one of our clients came across it just today. It affects shipping Safari, Chrome, and WebKit nightly builds. I have produced a much simpler test case and posted it at:

http://www.sirensclef.com/image_map/

It very simply amounts to image maps no longer working after DOM manipulations occur for a containing node.
