The ASSERT in question:
http://trac.webkit.org/browser/trunk/WebCore/platform/sql/SQLiteDatabase.h#L100
has been there for over 2 years.  It was added by Brady in
http://trac.webkit.org/changeset/25356 and later modified by Mark in
http://trac.webkit.org/changeset/27717.

I expect that Gtk is just doing something funky here.
