As you've noted this works correctly with a recent version of WebKit but not in
iPhone OS 3.1.  You didn't mention testing but you'll probably find that your
test case also fails in Safari 4.0.3 and earlier versions.  The reason for this
is that it is a very recent addition to the specification and was only
implemented in WebKit just over five weeks ago.  See

I'm closing this bug as WORKSFORME on the basis that this is implemented and
working in WebKit.
