We also can’t make changes that would break parsing with older versions of
libxml2.  The oldest version that I’m aware of a need to support is 2.6.16,
which ships on Tiger.

Given that our code works correctly with recent versions of libxml2 (2.7.3)…
are we sure this isn’t a regression in libxml2 that should be fixed on their
end?
