I think I am going to sit on this patch until I have commit access, since
breaking the tree and being unable to revert it myself is not very helpful.

If anyone else would like to take up the crusade I welcome your help.  Until
then, I recommend "export LC_NUMERIC=en_US.UTF-8".  ;)
