I don't really like this fix because of all the duplicated code.  I also think
that this needs a NodeIterator test case before it can be landed, but I'm
posting it for review now in case those playing along at home have fundamental
architectural complaints that I need to address.  We could land this as-is, but
I also think it could definitely be better. I'm most interested in hearing from
Darin Adler, since he has worked in this code extensively.
