Introducing a persistent state doesn't sound great, because it's likely that
developers with inspection enabled will get worse performance and potentially
even different behavior than normal users (and it's easy to forget about
changing the state in the past). Who wants to tell pundits that they need to
change Inspector options to confirm others' benchmark results?
