No, I don't think the existing implementation, as-is, is appropriate for any
platform.

However, I will certainly acknowledge that I believed the Cairo call in
question copied its source pointer when it in fact didn't.

I guess I will take your word for that.  Perhaps you could take my word that
that is also the motivation for these changes.  And perhaps we could please,
please, for crying out loud, stop discussing bug 25709 and start talking about
something productive.
