Okay, let me start with patches to make the code cross-platform again. It was
cross-platform in a sense that the decoded image buffer could be simply
consumed (e.g. uploaded to the graphics server). There is no reason to not
support this default case, it is useful to Qt (external patches), Torchmobile,
the EFL port...
