Robert, I think your idea is great!

A slightly more pragmatic and easier approach would be to create a header file
(WebKitVersion.h?) that we can share across the ports who would like to. (That
file could be generated with your script for example?)

CC'ing Darin Fisher from the Chromium team and Gustavo from the Gtk+ port. I
can imagine that they would be interested in sharing :)
