This is too big for me to review, but maybe Hyatt can help you here.  If there
is any way to split this patch down into smaller stages, I think that will help
your review times substantially.

We don't normally use "get" in method names.  Sometimes "lookup" for when there
is some computation needed, but normally instead of "getFoo" we just use "foo".
This is covered in the style guide.
