In Firefox: 

 * the routine works.

In Safari, with annotated links that refer/redirect to pages beyond Google
Groups: 

 * the routine works.

In WebKit, Safari and OmniWeb, with annotated links that refer/redirect to
Google Groups:

 * the routine fails.

 Following Google's advice: 

 * I have deleted all Google cookies but the problem persists.
