I have also been trying to figure this out for the past 3 days. Finally found
this bug report.

The desired behavior is not all that uncommon.  Oftentimes developers want to
know how long a visitor was on the page.  Without being able to create an image
or use AJAX, there really isn't much else.

I am happy to have found Jorge's workaround.  Is there any word on this issue? 
I would prefer not to use a workaround.  What is the purpose of this
restriction?
