Confirmed. This is due to our naive implementation of WebKit search input
fields.

The code is in the WebCore/platform/gtk/RenderThemeGtk.cpp
RenderThemeGtk::paintSearchField*() functions. I won't have time to work on
this any time soon but can review patches.
