Landed in r32766.

I had to make a few hundred lines of coding style fixes. Please check the
commit to make sure everything is in order.

This is going to need some stabilisation work now, still crashes from time to
time.

We'll probably want it turned off by default in the GTK+ port with a
configurable runtime option to enable it, or we're going to be innundated with
bug reports.
