This is a bug in Google's GMail code.  You should be able work around it
through the (admittedly not ideal) method of turning off rich text input.

There is nothing we can do to fix this without breaking other sites that are
expecting standards compliant behaviour, and obviously we can't fix gmail
ourselves :(
