It seems that Google emits 'space' for Safari while it emits <wbr> for Firefox. 

So,  Google needs to be 'persuaded' to either omit 'wbr'/space altogether
(assuming webkit's line breaking handles edge cases like urls reasonably) or
use 'wbr' for Safari as well.
