We're having trouble reproducing this issue.  Could this be an ISP issue?

What Mac hardware/OS X software combinations have you tried where you see this
issue?

If you get a hang logging in, one thing you could do is to take a "sample" of
the Safari process while it's hanging.  Use the Activity Monitor to get a
sample (I think there's a button for this in 10.5.x), or run this command from
a Terminal window:

sample Safari 10 10

Please attach the file created to this bug.  (Plain text format is preferred;
use Cmd-Shift-T in TextEdit to change the format from RTF to plain text.)
