Content fails to render partially with Cairo 1.5.x (tested with 1.5.8), but is
known to work with 1.4.14.

It could be a bug in new Cairo versions, or it could be that 1.5.x is stricter
and is now failing outright on something we were doing wrong.

Screenshot of the issue attached but no reduction yet. I'll be busy the next
few days, hopefully someone else can track this one down.
