I don't think that 100 - 200MB is overly large.  A bunch of things are cached
in memory to improve performance, and the memory figures you mention are
consistent with what I would expect given the cache sizes used with 1.5 - 2GB
of RAM.  I wouldn't expect it to negatively impact the performance of your
machine either, as if the memory is unused it would simply be paged out when
the system is low on memory.
