I just realized that the comments shouldn't talk about ligatures - ligatures
are formed at rendering time from non-combining Unicode characters, like
English "ffi", or many Indic ones. This patch fixed Backspace for sequences
with combining characters, as ligatures worked correctly already.

This will need to be corrected to avoid future confusion.
