alternative updated version of patch (against 31893, despite the filename)

this is an amateur attempt at a rediff of the 31326 patch against 31893. as
noted in my comment, it doesn't seem to work for me, for some reason. all
ChangeLog changes have been taken out, so it applies against the snapshot
tarball. if any of my changes are useful they can happily be used under any
licensing terms at all.
