In the non-working case, there are many more open sockets, so I think that it's
indeed a problem with a proxy. Not sure if there is a client-side bug, too, but
if there is, it's definitely in lower level OS code, not in WebKit.

Would you be willing to file a bug at <http://bugreport.apple.com> (free
registration required) for Apple engineers working on lower levels of network
stack to take a look? If not, I can move this bug myself, but there will be
less opportunities for them to communicate with you then.
