i can't verify this.  safari 3.0.4 calls setShrinksStandaloneImagesToFit: which
sets WebKitShrinksStandaloneImagesToFitKey to 1 on launch regardless of its
previous value.

i don't understand this.  is setShrinksStandaloneImagesToFit: getting called
with no parameter?
