I can confirm that the problem is specific to the old gmail, closing this as
works correctly (as our behaviour is correct).  It's likely you're hitting a
work around for an old safari 2 bug.

It sounds like the gmail updates are slowly rolling out for everyone, so
hopefully it will be available for oyu in the near future :-/

PS. It turns out bugzilla doesn't have a Works Correctly closing option -- so
am closing as WONTFIX... bizarre
