Sorry for the misunderstanding Justin.

I think it is ok to use <span>. Actually, I'm copying here the key phrase from
the ticket description (removing the browser difference "comment"):

"The problem is that an additional class="Apple-style-span" attribute is added
to each of those <span>s"

So, to conclude, ok for <span>, no ok for class="Apple-style-span".
