I think the difference might lie in whether the window's or tab's content area
is big enough to fit the image without shrinking it. When shrunk, the image
draws. Clicking it once with the (+) magnifying glass cursor makes it
disappear. Clicking again makes it re-appear. So the problem is with rendering
those images at full scale.
