See bug 4788 for the details. To summarize, Gmail has special-case code for
Safari, which should really only be used with the release version but not with
the nightly builds (whose event.button has been changed to match the spec). The
US English version of Gmail now checks the WebKit version and avoids the
special-case code for nightly builds. The UK English version, Google Mail,
seems to lack this check. Google should fix it if they want to support nightly
builds.
